Johnson voted with Republicans and against the majority of Democrats for a bill allowing Attorney General Ken Paxton to sue local communities for passing or enforcing common-sense gun safety ordinances.

  • The NRA lobbied in favor of the bill.

  • Ken Paxton has already used this legislation to go after the city of Galveston for an ordinance that prevented gun shops from being located next to schools, parks, and places of worship. The city was forced to rescind its ordinance.

Johnson voted with Republicans and against the majority of Democrats for a bill repealing restrictions on silencers and banning state law enforcement entities from unilaterally enforcing federal bans on silencers.

  • NRA allies Gun Owners of America, Open Carry Texas, Lone Star Gun Rights, Texas Carry, and Texas Constitutional Enforcement lobbied in favor of the bill. Loosening restrictions on silencers has been a major priority of the NRA.

 Johnson voted with Republicans and against the majority of Democrats for a bill banning state government entities from taking action stating a handgun license holder is prohibited from entering state property carrying a handgun.

  • The NRA lobbied in favor of the bill.

Johnson voted with Republicans and against the majority of Democrats for a bill banning the restriction of the sale or transportation of guns or ammunition during a declared disaster. The bill effectively made gun and ammunition manufacturers and retailers essential businesses.

  • The NRA lobbied in favor of the bill and its passage was celebrated by Texas Gun Owners of America. 

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic gun violence was at an all time high. Gun homicides and non-suicide related deaths increased 25% over 2019. At a time when hospitals were at capacity, and businesses were closed, Rep. Johnson and Republicans in the Texas Legislature designated gun shops as essential.

Johnson voted with Republicans and against the majority of Democrats for a bill banning easements that restrict firearm possession on grounds covered by the easement.

  • The NRA lobbied in favor of the bill.

  • Once again Rep Johnson and Republicans in the Texas Legislature are forbidding individuals from attempting to keep themselves safe on their own property by limiting their ability to regulate guns.

Johnson voted with Republicans and against Democrats for a bill giving EMTs and Firefighters the right to carry handguns on duty.
